Council of the European Union adopts resolution on security through encryption and security despite encryption.

In particular, the resolution notes that in some cases encryption renders the access to and analysis of the content of communications impossible and that, therefore, it is important to preserve the powers of competent authorities in the area of security and criminal justice through allowing lawful access to data, and to enable them to carry out tasks prescribed by law.

In addition, the resolution emphasises the need for cooperating with the tech industry, as well as that any technical solutions for accessing encrypted data need to comply with the principles of legality, transparency, necessity, and proportionality, alongside protection of personal data by design and by default.
