EU–Canada: a Digital Partnership and two Memorandums on Artificial Intelligence and Digital Identity have been signed.

The European Commission has announced that the European Union and Canada strengthened digital cooperation at the first EU–Canada Digital Partnership Council, held in Montreal, to coincide with the G7 Ministerial Meeting on Industry, Digital and Technology hosted by Canada.

One of the most concrete results is the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Artificial Intelligence, focused on "trustworthy" AI technologies that respect fundamental rights, with the ambition of facilitating trade, investment and economic growth. The agreement aims to intensify cooperation on standards, regulation, skills and adoption of AI; It also includes the exchange of good practices to accelerate adoption in strategic sectors (including health, manufacturing, energy, culture, science and public services), together with initiatives to support SMEs. On the infrastructure and research level, the parties commit to work on large infrastructures for AI, on the access of industry and academia to computing capacity (AI compute), and to explore scientific cooperation on fundamental research and development of advanced models "for the public good", including in areas such as monitoring extreme weather events and climate change. A structured dialogue on data spaces, considered particularly relevant for the development of large AI models,  is also announced.
