DATA PROTECTION

Italian Data Protection Authority measure prohibiting Amazon from filing and collecting workers' health data.

The Italian Data Protection Authority has prohibited, as a matter of urgency and with immediate effect, Amazon Italia Logistica srl from processing the personal data of over 1800 workers employed at the Passo Corese (RI) plant.

The ban concerns information collected - systematically, for the entire duration of the employment relationship and kept for up to 10 years from its termination - through a platform connected to the attendance system, accessible to numerous managers.

The information, noted on the platform following interviews with workers immediately after their return from a period of absence, refers to specific pathologies suffered (Crohn's syndrome, herniated disc, pacemaker wearer), adherence to strikes and participation in trade union activities (also with reference to uses considered improper of absences),  as well as personal data of a family and private nature (terminally ill father, sister with brain tumor, marital separations). All this in violation of the legislation that prohibits the employer from processing data that is not relevant for the purpose of assessing the employee's professional aptitude.

Amazon Italia Logistica will also have to stop processing the data collected through four cameras positioned near bathrooms and refreshment areas reserved for workers.

Finally, with the same measure, the Authority prohibited Amazon from processing data used illegally through the same platform, if it is used in the company's other logistics centers in Italy in a manner similar to what was ascertained.
