Ministry of Defence: the "Defence Strategy on Artificial Intelligence" has been published, with a new governance architecture (UIA and LIAD) and a commitment to an implementation plan within three months.

The Italian Ministry of Defense has made available the document "AI and Defense: Defense Strategy on Artificial Intelligence", presented as a guideline aimed at equipping the Administration, as a whole, with advanced, secure and resilient AI systems, in a context characterized by rapid technological evolution and intensification of threats.

The most discontinuity, at the organizational level, is the revision of internal governance: the Strategy provides for the establishment of an Office for Artificial Intelligence (UIA), called upon to implement the political direction and oversee the overall consistency of implementation, including the coordination of ethical and legal profiles. In parallel, an Artificial Intelligence for Defense Laboratory (LIAD) is outlined, configured as an "AI Delivery Center", with functions of development, testing and operation of AI solutions in synergy with end users, under the coordination of the UIA.

On the content, the Strategy articulates a set of strategic guidelines (referred to as fifteen "Strategic Directives") covering transversal areas: from the governance and technological procurement structure, to the operational use of AI, up to training and skills. Finally, in terms of accountability, the commitment to publish an implementation plan within three months of approval, intended to detail priorities, actions and performance indicators, with clear repercussions also on the external verifiability of the progress is noteworthy.
